In Orthodox Christian tradition, the three crosses represent the central event of the crucifixion, where Jesus Christ was crucified alongside two thieves. While the two thieves represent human sin and mortality, Jesus's cross embodies the triumph of love, sacrifice, and the promise of salvation. This is not just a scene of suffering, but a scene of profound victory, as Christ's death paved the way for resurrection and eternal life. The middle cross represents Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who willingly offered himself as a sacrifice for the sins of humanity. The two other crosses depict two criminals crucified with Jesus. One, traditionally called Dismas (the Good Thief), repented and was promised salvation by Jesus. The other represents those who reject God's offer of grace. The Orthodox Church emphasizes the triumph of Christ's resurrection, which is made possible through his sacrifice on the cross. His death is not seen as an end, but as the means by which humanity is redeemed and given the hope of eternal life.
